Accelerated Reader
To see the Accelerated Reader Books available in the library please visit the AR BookFinder. The keycode is NL787229.

Students at BES participate in the Accelerated Reader Program to improve reading comprehension.  Each marking period, classroom teachers assign an individual goal for each student to achieve during the marking period.  Students check out AR books (marked with an orange dot on the spine) from the library and when they have finished reading the book, they take the AR test on the computer.  They will be asked to answer 5, 10, or 20 multiple choice questions depending on the length and complexity of the book.  They earn points for each test they pass.  Students must obtain a score above 60% to earn points for a particular book.

When a student meets or exceeds the goal, they will have their name listed on the bulletin board in the cafeteria.  Students in grades 3 & 4 will also earn prizes throughout the year such as bookmarks, certificates, ribbons, pencils, snacks, and extra book checkouts.  Students in grades 5 & 6 will be invited to attend an AR party for making their goals.  At the party students will have a snack, play some games, and be entered in drawings for prizes.  The more points students earn over their goal, the more chances they will have to win prizes at the party.

Teachers receive weekly reports to monitor student reading.  At the end of each marking period, a Student Record Report will be sent home in report cards for parents to view.  You will be able to see how many tests your child has taken, the book levels, the score on each test, and whether the book was read to the child, read with another person, or read independently.  This is valuable information that you may want to discuss with your child and/or your child’s teacher.
