Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted 2005-2010

 

Summary of Gifted Plan Components and Objectives

 

 

I.                   Identification

Goal:  To ensure that our identification process gathers all the information necessary to make informed decisions about which children need the services of our gifted program.

Objectives:

  1. Evaluate multiple criteria currently in use.
  2. Develop plan to identify and serve students who are gifted in science.
  3. Educate faculty about characteristics of gifted students.
  4. Change timing of off-grade testing window.

 

II.                Delivery of Services

Goal:  Provide a continuum of services in grades K-12 that assures appropriately differentiated instructional programs within the classroom and through a variety of enrichment and extension opportunities.

Objectives:

  1. Schools will continue to implement organizational patterns known as “cluster grouping” of students which will enable gifted and high achieving students to work together.
  2. Offer advanced classes at middle and high school level.
  3. Provide the opportunity to accelerate students by grade level or subject.
  4. Improve the use of current school gifted resource teachers and investigate the use of zone coordinators.
  5. Establish a communication system for gifted resource teachers.
  6. Implement vertical teaming and articulation meetings (across grade levels and by subject).

 

III.             Curriculum Development

Goal:  Provide curriculum for gifted students grades K-12 which will include differentiation and the use of a variety of materials to provide instruction at a pace and level suitable for each student.

Objectives:

  1. Design and advanced science program/curriculum to serve identified students.
  2. Strengthen current curriculum in the areas of English mathematics, science and social studies.
  3. Provide information and counseling about courses available at the middle and high school levels

  

IV.              Staff Development

Goal:  Professional development training will be provided for all personnel directly involved in delivery of services to gifted students.

Objectives:

  1. Initiate training of new personnel in administrative tasks associated with identification and services.
  2. Provide training in differentiation of instruction to all classroom teachers in the four core areas.
  3. Teachers working with the gifted will be encouraged to secure licensure and expand their knowledge base of gifted education.
  4. Secure coordinators for each attendance zone.

 

V.                 Family and Community Involvement

Goal 1:       Capitalize on community resources

Objectives:

  1. Increase the quantity of available community resources.
  2. Assure potential community resources are fully explored in a timely manner.
  3. Assure available resources are fully utilized.

 

Goal 2:       Increase parental understanding, support, and involvement with the gifted program.

Objectives:

  1. Target parents with information about direct gifted services, advanced classroom opportunities, and extracurricular academic activities.
  2. Increase parental involvement in information dissemination.
  3. Increase parent and community participation in extracurricular academic activities.
