THE LIBERTY ATHLETIC BOOSTER’S CLUB BY-LAWS
LHS offers a wide variety of inter-scholastic programs that complement the development of the total individual. LHS teams are marked by aggressive play and good citizenship. The Minutemen participate locally in the Seminole District and are classified “AA” by the Virginia High School League (VHSL).
LHS fall sports include cross country, football, golf, volleyball, and cheerleading. Winter sports include basketball, cheerleading, indoor track, swimming, and wrestling. The spring sports are baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, and track. Other VHSL sanctioned activities include drama, forensics, and academic competition or ACE.
The purpose of LHS athletics is to promote positive life-long habits of health, fitness, participation, and sportsmanship. Students participating are expected to exhibit a positive image to the community by maintaining eligibility, good attitudes, and good sportsmanship. Besides representing their own character, student athletes’ behavior affects the reputation of LHS. Therefore, LHS is committed to the highest expectations for fair play and good sportsmanship. LHS will not tolerate poor or disrespectful behavior. Such behavior will be cause for dismissal from athletic teams.
The following guidelines are given to students participating in interscholastic competition or attending athletic events: · Act as a positive representative of LHS and the community when participating in or attending school events.· Welcome opposing teams and make them feel at home by offering assistance. · Show respect to visiting teams and spectators.· Never use profanity.· Stand and remove your hat for the playing of the National Anthem.· Regardless of the outcome of the event, thank the opponents, sponsors, coaches, and referees for their attendance and good sportsmanship.· Be polite to each other as well as to visitors.· If you have questions or concerns regarding a coach’s decision, you are make an appointment at a mutually convenient time to speak with the coach. (Refer to the athletic director’s letter to parents published at the beginning of each season regarding communications with the coach.)
The participation in inter-scholastic competition is strictly governed by the regulations of the VHSL. The requirements listed below must be met for a student to maintain eligibility to participate in inter-scholastic competition:
· For the first semester be currently enrolled in not fewer than five subjects (not including any repeated class) or their equivalent offered for credit and which may be used for graduation, and have passed five subjects or their equivalent, offered for credit and which may be used for graduation the immediately preceding year. · For the second semester be currently enrolled in not fewer than five subjects (not including any repeated class) or their equivalent offered for credit and which may be used for graduation, and have passed five subjects or their equivalent offered for credit and which may be used for graduation the immediately preceding semester. · The student shall have been regularly enrolled in the school which he/she represents not later than the fifteenth school day of the semester. · The student shall not have reached the age of 19 on or before the first day of August of the school year in which he/she wishes to compete. · The student shall not have been enrolled in the last four years of high school for a period of more than eight consecutive semesters, beginning with the semester in which he/she was enrolled for the first time in the ninth grade. · The student shall not have enrolled in one high school and subsequently transferred to and enrolled in another high school without a corresponding change in the residence of his/her parents, parent, or guardian. · The student shall have submitted to the athletic director of his/her school, prior to becoming a member of any school athletic squad or team or prior to participating in any off-season strength and conditioning programs, League Form No. 2 (Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physical Examination Form), completely filled in and properly signed, attesting that he/she has been examined and found to be physically fit for athletic competition, and that his/her parents consent to his/her participation. Valid forms for the 2006-2007 school year may be dated no earlier than May 1, 2006. · Students who are absent or who arrive after 12:00 noon are not eligible to compete in a game or practice that day, unless approved by the principal.· A student who must be absent from practice should inform the head coach before dismissal of school for the day. It is responsibility of the head coach to determine if the excuse is justified or not. · During the time of practice and games, students must follow the same standards of behavior as those for the regular classroom. Disciplinary action may be taken by the coach and/or the administration. (See the Bedford County Public School Athletic Regulations.) · The athlete must put the team first and not self.· Any student loaned equipment is expected to return it or pay the replacement cost. · Any injury must be reported to the head coach and athletic trainer. · All participants are to comply with insurance regulations as outlined in the athletic handbook.· Students who receive a full day of MIP will not be allowed to practice or participate in any extra curricular activities that day.· Students who are suspended from school will not be allowed to practice or participate in extra curricular activities during the suspension period.· Students who are assigned to the Bridge School will not be allowed to practice or participate in extra curricular activities while assigned to the Bridge School.· Any student found to have possession of drugs or alcohol while on school grounds or at any school function, home or away, will be suspended to the school superintendent and may be given a suspension from school for 365 days by the Bedford County School Board.· Students may be suspended from or removed from an extra curricular activity for violation of school rules that may result in criminal charges, including but not limited to tobacco possession and/or use, fighting, truancy, and disorderly conduct. Suspension from an extra curricular activity or removal from an activity is at the discretion of the administration.
In order for a person to letter, or to receive an athletic award as a representative of LHS, each athlete must meet the requirements regarding participation, attitude, conduct, and any other criteria deemed appropriate by the coach.
