Reading First Stewartsville Elementary is a Reading First school. Reading First is a focused nation-wide effort to enable all students to become successful early readers. The program provides assistance to states and districts to establish scientifically based reading programs for students enrolled in kindergarten through grade three. Funds support increased professional development to ensure that all teachers have the skills they need to teach these programs effectively. The program also supports the use of screening and diagnostic tools and classroom-based instructional reading assessments to measure how well students are reading and to monitor their progress. Researchers have discovered how to successfully teach children to read. Five areas of reading instruction are give equal focus; phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Title 1 Reading Stewartsville Elementary is a Title 1 school. Title 1 is a federally-funded program designed to offer extra academic assistance to students who need help in meeting high-state standards in reading and math. The program at Stewartsville Elementary offers students an opportunity to work in an individual or small-group setting with highly qualified instructors. The service is in addition to their classroom instruction. In reading, students work on principles such as: fluency, comprehension, word study, and writing, depending on his or her needs. Students are exposed to authentic literature in many genres, both fiction and non-fiction. Title 1 reading teachers work in conjunction with Reading First to work with students and classroom teachers to monitor and assess students in reading throughout the program.
