STAUNTON   RIVER   MIDDLE   SCHOOL

Staunton River Middle School is located in a rural setting in Bedford County, Virginia.   Bedford County is one of the largest counties in the state, consisting of 764 square miles. According to the 2000 census, 60,371 citizens reside in the county. The City of Bedford, the county seat, has an additional 6,299 residents.

The Bedford area has a diversified economy that includes manufacturing, wholesale, retail, services, tourism, and agriculture. The growth experienced in the county in recent years has placed many new students in the public school system. Growth has been especially rapid in the eastern, southern, and the southwestern portions of the county. Staunton River Middle School is located in the southern part of the county and has been impacted by significant growth in the Smith Mountain Lake and Stewartsville  regions of the county.

Staunton River Middle School draws from a diverse community. Our students might live in subdivisions, mobile homes, family farms, or lakefront homes. The present growth phenomenon that began in the early 1960's with the establishment of Smith Mountain Lake has resulted in the blending of old established rural families, with new, more cosmopolitan residents.
