Journey to Japan 2007 - 2008
Thaxton Elementary School

In October 2007, Tracey Clark, School Library Media
Specialist at Thaxton Elementary School, traveled to Japan for three weeks as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher

Program.  Along with a group of 200 educators from around the United States, she was introduced to the Japanese culture, food, and educational system.  Students in first through sixth grades at Thaxton Elementary have been learning about all things Japanese since her return.  Each student

created a book about what he or she learned during library classes this year.  The younger grades made books about Japanese geography, numbers,

colors, and literature.  Grades four through six completed a research

project on Japan using atlases, almanacs, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and the Internet.  Their books include entries on Japanese geography, resources, words and phrases, people and customs, holidays and festivals, math,

earthquakes, schools, and literature.

Students’ books will be displayed on Veteran’s Day 2008 at the

National D-Day Memorial in Bedford County.
