HEALTH SERVICES
Bedford County Public Schools Health Services is committed to enhancing student health and well-being through intentional collaboration and partnerships, fostering optimal health outcomes for every student. We have full-time Registered Nurses in every school that play a pivotal role in positively impacting academic success by addressing medical needs within the school setting.
THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL NURSE
According to the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), a school nurse's primary role is to protect and promote student health by bridging healthcare and education, providing care coordination, advocating for student-centered care, and collaborating to create systems that support student development and academic success; essentially acting as a leader in the school community to ensure students are healthy enough to learn effectively.
Key aspects of a school nurse's role as defined by NASN:
- Health assessments and screenings: Performing vision, hearing, and other necessary health screenings to identify potential health issues.
- Medication administration: Managing student medications that need to be taken during school hours.
- Emergency care: Responding to medical emergencies in the school and providing first aid.
- Health education: Teaching students about health topics like nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
- Case management: Coordinating care for students with chronic health conditions, including communication with parents and healthcare providers.
- Mental health support: Identifying and providing support for students experiencing mental health concerns.
- Advocacy: Working with school staff, parents, and community partners to promote a healthy school environment and address health disparities.
- Collaboration with healthcare providers: Referring students to appropriate healthcare providers when necessary.
